Chapter One
From the opening pages
There’s a conversation sitting in most families, quietly avoided, that everyone assumes there’ll be time for eventually. What someone actually wants if their health fails. The things left unsaid between a father and his grown children. An apology, or a forgiveness, that’s been owed for years and never quite offered.
I’ve watched friends lose a parent suddenly, with none of it ever properly said, and I’ve watched the particular, additional grief that comes from not knowing what someone actually wanted, or never having said the thing that mattered while there was still a clear chance to say it.
