About the book

A quiet reckoning, written plainly

Book Three of The Later Life Trilogy. What comes after adjusting to this stage of life — actually building something on purpose within it. Thirty years of building things that had to work, translated, with a bit of adjusting, into the business of building an actual life.

Chapter One

From the opening pages

If you’ve read the first two books, you’ll know this story by now. The shock of arriving at sixty without a manual. The long, quiet reweaving of an identity that used to hang entirely on a job title. This last book is about what comes after both of those — not simply adjusting to this stage of life, but actually building something on purpose within it.

I spent thirty years building things that genuinely had to work — platforms that couldn’t fail, projects worth more money than I’ll ever fully get my head around, in conditions that didn’t forgive sloppy thinking. It turns out almost everything I learned doing that translates, with a bit of adjusting, to building an actual life.

William “Billy” Brown

William “Billy” Brown
Billy, at home in Scotland

Billy is a Scottish engineer, author and musician who spent more than thirty years working around the world before he ever thought of himself as a writer.

He writes from lived experience rather than theory — about work, love, distance, and the quieter lessons a working life hands over.
