About the book

A quiet reckoning, written plainly

A stand-alone guide for the particular experience of being single again later in life — not the acute heartbreak of a marriage ending in your thirties, but the strange, specific business of starting over at fifty, in a body and a life that don’t look anything like the ones you started over in the first time round.

What readers will find inside

For the men whose friends are mostly settled, whose bodies have quietly changed the rules without asking, and who are surrounded by well-meaning opinions about what a man their age is supposed to do next. Written from the inside, with no interest in pretending any of it is simple.

Why Billy wrote it

I wrote this one because nobody had written the version I needed when I was in the middle of it. Fifty is not thirty, and the honest guides for men my age were, as far as I could see, mostly missing.

Chapter One

One — The second first time

If you’ve read the rest of this series, you’ll know I eventually got somewhere good. A rebuilt life, a relationship chosen on purpose, a version of myself I actually liked. I’m not going to pretend that was the end of the story, because life doesn’t really work that way. Years later, for very different reasons than the first time, I found myself single again. Fifty years old, starting over, in a body and a life that didn’t look anything like the one I’d started over in the first time round.

This book is about that particular kind of starting over — not the acute heartbreak of a marriage ending in your thirties, but the strange, specific experience of being single again later in life, when your friends are mostly settled, when your body has quietly changed the rules without asking you, and when everyone around you seems to have an opinion about what a man your age is supposed to do next.

Starting Over After Divorce at 50

At 50, the retirement I'd planned disappeared along with my marriage. I had to decide whether to abandon the dream or find a way to continue it alone.
