Chapter One
From the opening pages
This is a different kind of loss than the rest of what I’ve written about. A divorce, however painful, is an ending you both, in some way, walk away from. This one, you don’t walk away from. It arrives, and it stays, and there’s no version of it where the person you built a life with is simply somewhere else now, reachable if you needed them badly enough.
I haven’t lived this one myself, and I want to say that plainly at the very start, rather than pretending otherwise. But I’ve watched close friends live it, walked beside a few of them through the worst of it, and listened carefully to what actually helped and what didn’t.
